EASY CHILDRENS CHARITY QUILT

This is an easy quilt, easily made from start to finish in less
than 8 hours. The pattern yields a 36 X 36 quilt. To extend the
quilt to 40 X 40 add a 4 inch border.
Fabrics & Materials:
1. 10 different fabrics (1/8 yd. of each). Pick nice, bright
colors; dont worry about blending or matching. Or use 10 fat
quarters.
2. For optional border, ½ yard. of a dominant color from the
prints.
3. Batting about 40 X 40, or 42 X 42 with the border. For warmer
climates use 1 Ό yards of flannel, 42 wide. The flannel should
be pre-shrunk and cut to the same size as the backing.
4. Fabric for backing, a piece 40 X 40 ( 1 & 1/8 yd.), or 44 X
44 (1 & Ό yd.)including the border.
5. Binding 1/3 yd. (3 double fold binding)
Cutting:
1. From each of the ten fabrics cut a 4 X 42 Strip.
2. If using fat quarters, cut a two strips from each of the ten
fat quarters 4 X 22.
3. Cut these strips into 4 blocks, yielding 10 blocks per
strips. Stack the blocks cut from each strip together and label
the stacks #1 - #10.
4. Optional border ~ cut four 4 ½ X 42 strips.
5. Backing cut a piece 40 X 40; if optional border is add cut
44 X 44
6. Binding ~ cut four 3 X 42 strips. The binding for this
quilt is 3 double fold for durability.
THE LAYOUT:
Take a block from each of the numbered stacks in the following
order:
Row 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Row 2: 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Row 3: 9, 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Row 4: 8, 9, 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Row 5: 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Row 6: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Row 7: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 2, 3, 4
Row 8: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 2, 3
Row 9: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 2
Row 10: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1
Stitch the rows together using a Ό seam, pressing the seams in
opposite directions (i.e., row 1 to the right, row 2 to the
left, etc.). Then stitch row 1 to row 2, and so on. This will
yield a square top, 36 by 36. The cutting and piecing will
take about 4 hours.
Add optional 4 ½ inch strips for border for a square quilt top
of 40 X 40.
Use regular batting if the quilt is for cool climates, flannel
for warm climates.
Make your sandwich of backing, batting, and top. To quilt,
stitch from corner to corner of the squares in long, continuous
rows, The quilting will take about 2 hours. Trim the excess
backing and batting.
Attach your binding and hand stitch to the back of the quilt.
This will take about 2 hours.
There is your 8 hour (tops) charity quilt!
You may want to make a quilt larger than 36 square by
increasing the number of fabrics and the number of rows.
